Date Spotted: July 11, 2025
Location: Karon Beach, Phuket, Thailand
For the first time in nearly two years, the Blue Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus) has been spotted again along the shores of Karon Beach. The last reported sighting in the area was in August 2023. While this tiny sea creature may look like something out of a fantasy world, it is in fact a dangerous marine animal — and it's important that tourists, especially those with children, are made aware.
What is the Blue Dragon?
The Blue Dragon, scientifically known as Glaucus atlanticus, is a type of nudibranch, or sea slug, that is rarely seen but truly mesmerizing. Its brilliant blue coloring, silver underbelly, and wing-like appendages make it a favorite subject of ocean photography.
Despite its small size — usually only 3 to 5 cm long — the Blue Dragon is not to be underestimated. It feeds on venomous prey like the Portuguese Man o' War and stores the venom in its own body, concentrating it to become even more potent.
Is It Dangerous?
Yes — although not fatal, a sting from a Blue Dragon can cause sharp pain, swelling, nausea, and allergic reactions. In rare cases, it may require medical attention, especially in children or individuals with allergies.
That’s why it is important to teach children not to touch or play with any unfamiliar sea creatures, no matter how beautiful they may seem.
What Should You Do If You See One?
Do not touch it, even if it appears dead.
Inform local lifeguards or tour operators.
Keep young children and pets away.
Take a photo from a safe distance if you wish — but avoid physical contact.
No Need to Panic
While the sighting of Blue Dragons is rare, it’s also a natural part of marine biodiversity. With awareness and caution, you can still enjoy the beauty of Phuket’s beaches safely. The presence of Blue Dragons can sometimes indicate changes in ocean currents or an increase in their jellyfish prey — another reason why awareness matters.
