From the heart of a local who loves Thailand too deeply to stay silent
There was a time I believed in the dream of sustainable tourism with all my heart.
After graduating, I worked alongside a Japanese researcher, traveling from village to village across rural Thailand. That experience planted the seed of my dream—to be part of something that allowed the world to witness Thailand’s charm, but in a way that respects both the local communities and the natural environment.
Years later, that dream has led me to the frontlines of the tourism industry in Phuket. Here, I meet visitors from around the world, organize tours, and share my love for Thailand. But behind the beaches and smiles, there’s a growing shadow I can no longer ignore.
😞 What Tourists Are Seeing Now
Lately, I’ve been receiving links, news clips, and concerned messages from returning guests—many of whom love Thailand deeply but are now afraid to come back.
• Reports of overpriced transportation
• Stories of violence at nightlife venues
• Concerns about the so-called “taxi mafia”
• Rumors of corruption or exploitation in popular tourist zones
It hurts me, deeply.
Because this is not the Thailand I know.
Not the Thailand I love.
Not the land of smiles we’ve promised to the world.
💔 Why This Matters
Thailand’s economy depends heavily on tourism, and we pride ourselves on our hospitality. But if the actions of a few are allowed to taint our image, the cost is far greater than money. It’s trust. It’s dignity. It’s the soul of our people.
Sometimes I wonder…
Are these really “Thais” causing the trouble? Or are there foreign business interests hiding behind local faces?
Either way, we need serious conversations about regulation, fairness, and protection—not just for tourists, but for locals too.
🙏 My Voice as a Local Operator
As a small operator rooted in the local community, I want to say:
• We still have honest people who care.
• We still have guides, drivers, and locals who treat tourists like family.
• And yes, we still believe in sustainable tourism.
I hope, through my little voice, I can encourage travelers not to give up on Thailand.
But also encourage fellow Thais not to give up on doing the right thing.
Let’s protect what we love—together.
