When you hear the name *James Bond Island*, you might imagine thrilling spy missions, daring escapes, or the suave voice of Sean Connery ordering a martini—“shaken, not stirred.” But did you know that this dreamy limestone island nestled in Phang Nga Bay wasn’t always known by that glamorous name?
Let’s dive into a bit of island history.
🕶 From “Khao Phing Kan” to “James Bond Island”

Locals have long called it *Khao Phing Kan*, which means “hills leaning against each other” in Thai—perfectly describing the island’s unique geological formation. The iconic rock formation you see standing tall in the middle of the sea is called *Ko Ta Pu*, which translates to “Nail Island,” thanks to its tall, narrow shape.
So, how did it get its world-famous nickname?
In 1974, the James Bond movie *“The Man with the Golden Gun”* was filmed here. Starring Roger Moore as 007, the film showcased Phang Nga Bay’s dramatic cliffs, emerald waters, and hidden lagoons. The stunning scenery left such an impression that travelers from around the world began calling it *James Bond Island*—and the name stuck.
Today, it’s one of the most iconic spots in Thailand, drawing photographers, film buffs, and beach lovers alike.
### 🌊 A Day at James Bond Island — and an Unexpected Encounter
On one of our recent *James Bond Island day tours*, I had the pleasure of meeting a traveler who truly impressed me.

As we cruised through the calm waters, sipping coconut juice and soaking in the salty breeze, I noticed a tattoo sleeve on one guest’s arm. At first glance, it looked like a regular portrait design—but upon closer look, I realized it was a timeline of all the actors who have played James Bond!
From Sean Connery and Roger Moore to Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig—each face was carefully inked with realistic detail. I couldn't help but ask him about it.
He smiled and said, “Bond movies are part of my childhood. Visiting this island was on my bucket list since I was 10.”
That moment reminded me how a single film can inspire people across the world to chase their dreams—even if it means flying thousands of miles to stand on the same sand as their favorite secret agent.
